Over the past decade, the tobacco control movement has been transformed from a truly grassroots,
social movement into a highly centralized and institutionalized, money-driven movement. It has become increasingly focused
on money and less concerned with scientific accuracy, clarity of public communications, and transparency to the public.
This page documents these changes by highlighting the tactics being used by a number of the major national
anti-smoking organizations. While there are many smaller state and local groups that are also using questionable tactics,
such as misleading the public about the science, the organizations highlighted on this page are particularly important because
their actions set the tone for the entire movement and smaller groups take direction from them.
Our hope is that by highlighting the unethical, deceptive, hypocritical, or otherwise inappropriate actions
of these groups and holding them publicly accountable for these actions, they will decide to change their behavior and to
embrace the highest principles and standards of public health practice.
